The Art of Connection

Finding the Words

Practical guidance for when words feel difficult.

A candle, flower and card arranged for quiet remembrance

Acknowledge the situation without trying to fix it. Sometimes 'I'm thinking of you' is all that's needed. In moments of grief or profound change, the pressure to deliver a profound sentiment can lead to silence. Yet, it is the simple act of reaching out that carries the most weight.

We often worry that our words aren't enough, but the goal of a card or note isn't to solve the sorrow—it's to sit beside it. An honest, unadorned sentence is far more comforting than a forced platitude. The presence of your empathy is the true gift.

Support beyond a gift

Sometimes it helps to speak to someone

Our listening service offers a quiet, confidential conversation for people affected by grief. A trained support guide can help you think through the next few days, find words for family and friends, or identify the kind of practical support that may feel useful.

Grief can involve shock, numbness, sadness, exhaustion, anger, guilt or difficulty concentrating. These responses may arrive in waves and do not follow a reliable sequence. There is no correct timetable and no single right way to feel. Try to reduce immediate demands where you can: eat regularly, rest without expecting sleep to be perfect, take gentle movement, and choose one small practical task at a time.

You do not have to manage this alone. Speaking with someone you trust, a peer-support group, a counsellor or a healthcare professional can make the experience less isolating. Our team can help you locate appropriate professionals, local bereavement groups, charitable services and free NHS support, including talking therapies where available. We can also help you prepare the questions you may want to ask before making contact.

Consider asking for professional support if low mood or anxiety is becoming harder to manage, daily life feels persistently unmanageable, or the things you have tried are not helping. A GP can discuss your symptoms and suitable options. If you feel at immediate risk or unable to keep yourself safe, seek urgent help from the emergency or crisis services available where you live.

You are not alone. Reaching out does not need to wait until you have found the right words, and asking for support is not a failure to cope.
